The “Beyond Smart Robots” workshop is jointly organized by PROFACTOR and TU Wien during European Robotics Forum (ERF2018), the most influential meeting of the robotics community in Europe, held in Tampere, Finland, on 15 March 2018.

Beyond Smart Robots: Enabling Technologies for True Non-Expert Teaching

In conjunction with the European Robotics Forum 2018, Tampere, Finland, March 13-15, 2018

Aim and Scope

Although academic research demonstrated numerous ways to easily program robots, most of them have not become industrial reality yet. Current industrial robots are still difficult to program, leading to high changeover times when new products are introduced. This is especially challenging considering new trends like high product variants and low lot sizes. In order to compete with global markets, the factories of tomorrow have to close this gap soon.

At the same time, new technologies arising from other scientific branches bring disruptive changes with unexpected opportunities. For example, recent advances in Deep Learning endow robots with “human-level” cognitive capabilities. In some domains, they have even surpassed human skills, e.g. image classification or strategic games. Augmented Reality, as another example, has grown up from the infancy and is a major interaction technology used in gaming industry and modern mobile phones.

Target Audience and Topics

This workshop aims to find synergies between different fields of science to aid in the application area of non-experts robot teaching for industrial processes. In order to limit the high number of possible processes, the focus is on assembly.

The following topics are of interest (but not limited to):

  • Enabling technologies for teaching robots
  • AI / Deep Learning for robots
  • Tools and components that aid in teaching robots
  • Augmented reality for teaching robots
  • User interaction modules

The workshop will bring together researchers from relevant disciplines to exchange ideas and results towards the goal of boosting learning capabilities of robotics in the factory of the future. The workshop is structured with invited talks that provide both the industrial and academic perspective on the field of teaching robots for industrial environments. The talks present the challenges, new research opportunities and some success stories in this field. The talks are structured with time for questions and interactions to engage the audience and consolidate their point of view.

Invited Talks

  • Thomas Madsen Almdal, Danish Technological Institute
  • Walter Wohlkinger, Blue Danube Robotics
  • Jacek Malec, Lund University
  • Kathleen Delang, Fraunhofer IWU
  • Mildred Puerto Coy, Tecnalia

Important Dates

Workshop: 15 March 2018, 08:30 – 10:00 (Maestro, Tampere Hall, Tampere, Finland)

Add+it 2020 – CANCELED

September 29-30, 2020, Museum Arbeitswelt Steyr

… the essential symposium for the Additive Manufacturing community

On September 29-30, 2020, internationally experts from industry and academic in the field of Additive Manufacturing will meet in Steyr, Museum Arbeitswelt . The current state of research, highlights and trends will be presented and discussed.

The symposium aims to facilitate synergies between research and industry, to highlight the state of the art and beyond state of the art of additive manufacturing methods with the focus on polymers.

Statements – Add+it 2018

“Add+it 2018 provided an ideal opportunity for sharing of information especially between academia and industry; the location and organisation were convenient and conducive to effective communication and the level of knowledge of participants was pleasingly high.  This was an ideal forum to learn from experts at the forefront of their area of expertise.  The B2B meetings provided my first experience of “speed dating” and proved to be a very efficient means of forming mutually beneficial working relationships.”
Neil Hopkinson, Xaar 3D

Statements – Add+it 2017

„Very good symposium with interesting lectures and discussion partners. Simple, direct and uncomplicated combined with Austrian hospitality. A beautiful combination in Steyr.” Karsten Schlichter, Elkem Silicones

“The add+it provides an insight into the latest developments in additive manufacturing and brings together Austrian and international stakeholders. I would like to come back for interesting talks and the beautiful location. ” Dr. Jochen Zimmer, Nanoscribe

The EC funded research project DIMAP shows a new additive manufacturing paradigm and opportunities enabled by inkjet based multi material 3D printing. First results in ink development of ceramic en-hanced, electrically conductive, high strength as well as temperature resistant and foamable inks were achieved and first test objects were printed.

The project progress opens up opportunities for a wide range of industrial application.

In this workshop experts of the DIMAP-consortium together with Alphacam cover newest nanotechnologicaloptimized material developments in 3D-printing and the resulting possibilities in production.

WHY PARTICIPATE?
Inkjet based multimaterial 3D-printing can solve complex design tasks, but:

  • Which new applications are enabled through the current material developments?
  • How can electro-conductive inks be integrated directly into the component design ?
  • How reliable will be the upcoming parts ?
  • Which material properties are enabled through simulation and voxel-matrix design ?

WHO?
You are familiar with 3D printing and polyjet technology and you want to know more about new functional materials?

WHEN?
September 28, 2017
09:00 – 12:00 (before the Add+it)
