WHAT IS INDUSTRY 5.0?

As the latest evolutionary step in the industrial revolution, Industry 5.0 stands for a far-reaching transformation of the production landscape in Austria and is being driven forward by the European Commission’s initiative. In recent years, remarkable trends have emerged that have brought the necessity and importance of Industry 5.0 to the fore. This development is of crucial importance, as it not only increases the competitiveness of Austrian and European production, but also lays the foundation for a sustainable and future-proof industry.

In the coming years, Industry 5.0 will evolve towards the complete integration of man and machine to enable highly flexible, customized and sustainable production. This approach will not only increase competitiveness, but also promote the creation of high-quality jobs and the protection of the environment. In this context, it is crucial to take a closer look at the developments and potential of Industry 5.0 for Austrian and European production, paying particular attention to human-centeredness, resilience & sustainability.

Industry 5.0 at PROFACTOR

PROFACTOR has increased its research focus on the development of technologies that are highly relevant to the implementation of digital production. In the established focus areas, namely industrial automation systems and additive micro/nano manufacturing, four strategic fields of action have been defined in which it will further develop these technologies and align them with global trends and industrial needs. These efforts not only support the goals of Industry 5.0, but also contribute to the economic efficiency of Austrian production:

Zero3 addresses the increase of ecological, economic and social sustainability in individual production processes of manufacturing companies in Austria by increasing transparency about individual bottlenecks and potentials as well as through transparent analyses and presentations of fields of action and implementation measures.

BatteryLife

The high acquisition costs for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are considered one of the biggest obstacles to the introduction of electric vehicles on the mass market. Aged traction batteries sometimes no longer meet the high requirements for power and energy density. In this context, secondary use is a possible solution to reduce the acquisition costs of electric vehicles and extend the useful life of the batteries.

Drapebot

The DrapeBot project is developing a collaborative robot system for draping carbon fiber composite components. The robot drapes the large, less curved surfaces, while the human drapes the more curved and difficult-to-reach surfaces without creases. Humans and robots transport large blanks together.
