It follows a holistic approach from raw material sourcing to recycling, focusing on additive manufacturing where wood-derived materials are used for substrates and conductive inks. The demand for sustainable electronics solutions is high, as approximately 60% of CO₂ emissions in electronics manufacturing stem from printed circuit boards, and millions of tons of e-waste are generated annually worldwide.

HyPELignum develops several demonstrators, including printed circuit boards based on wood or cellulose fibers, energy-efficient microchips for sensor systems, and strategies for recycling wood and electronic materials. This creates an ecologically optimized product life cycle, supported by comprehensive sustainability analyses (life cycle, toxicity, biodegradability) and decision-making tools for circular electronics development.

Project objectives and technical innovation

HyPELignum aims to develop a scalable, pilot-ready platform process that uses wood—either as panels or cellulose fiber-based substrates—for additive manufacturing. This includes conductive inks based on common transition metals, an energy-efficient microcontroller for system control and sensor integration, and modular energy storage solutions. Another innovation driver is circularity: new recycling processes will be explored to separate and reuse wood-electronic components.

The technological novelty lies in combining biogenic materials with high-performance additive electronics manufacturing, replacing conventional printed circuit boards with biodegradable, CO₂-reducing alternatives. This is complemented by a sustainability framework incorporating life cycle analysis, toxicity and degradability studies to define green, circular electronics and enable design-oriented decision-making.

Sustainable electronics made from wood and paper for a green future

Reduces e-waste and CO₂ emissions by using wood and cellulose materials instead of petroleum-based plastics – ideal for companies committed to a circular economy.

Printing processes using conductive inks replace energy-intensive etching processes and avoid toxic chemicals, making manufacturing more affordable and safer.

Developing new materials like lignin layers for easy recycling opens up innovative approaches for compostable electronics and sustainable devices.

From circuit boards and sensors to household appliances and IoT products, this technology is creating new markets for environmentally friendly electronics solutions.

[67,49
post-634","project","type-project","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-functional-and-freeform-inkjet-printing","category-sustainability
["GET
