Brain surgeries are very challenging and difficult interventions. They are only possible with the help of high technology and exceptional cognitive and motor skills of neurosurgeons. The project “Medical EDUcation in Surgical Aneurysm clipping (MEDUSA)” creates an innovative training and planning platform for neurosurgeons.

A hybrid neurosurgical simulator will connect the real and virtual world to create versatile and realistic training possibilities. Surgeons can feel the “artificially made” patient haptically and see inner, otherwise invisible anatomical structures in the form of virtually generated holograms.

Visual understanding in the operating room

In this project, PROFACTOR uses technologies that have been developed in recent years for assistance systems. What was previously used to digitize workers, their tools, and their workpieces in the production plant, is now being applied to surgeons in the operating room.  The in-house development Assembly Eye will make it possible to track the surgical team and its activities without invasive sensors. This is will be done by extracting the movements of the individual actors from 2D image data in a spatial and temporal context and digitize what is relevant for the process. Envisioned applications are the analysis of surgical interventions in a training context and documentation of real surgeries.
